Portsmouth High School's Hydroponic Wall Purifies Indoor Air
Portsmouth, RI - Portsmouth High School (PHS) students recently unveiled their innovative hydroponic wall, a lush green solution to the problem of poor indoor air quality in schools.
Air quality in indoor spaces can significantly impact student health and academic performance. Alarmingly, 50% of schools report inadequate air quality, leading to increased absenteeism and respiratory issues.
Determined to address this issue, PHS students Madison Sylvia, Marley Hecht, and Emma Noble, guided by teachers Mr. Arsenault, embarked on a mission to construct a hydroponic wall.
Hydroponics involves cultivating plants in nutrient-rich water instead of soil. The PHS wall features air-purifying plants like ferns, peace lilies, and spider plants, strategically placed in Florafelt Pocket Panels made from breathable recycled water bottle PET plastic felt materials.
Despite challenges, the team persevered, ingeniously designing a water system that pumps water up the wall, ensuring optimal plant growth and efficient air purification.
The hydroponic wall not only adds aesthetic appeal to the school but also significantly improves air quality. Students and staff report noticeable improvements in the school's atmosphere.
The students plan to expand the wall and introduce more plants to create a greener, healthier school environment. Their efforts serve as an inspiring example of student ingenuity and their commitment to creating a more sustainable and healthy learning space.

Living Bookstore at the San Francisco Botanical Garden
A bold, whimsical site greets visitors at the entrance to San Francisco's botanical gardens - a living gift shop!
Manager Dennis Guttman envisioned a vertical garden on the outside, to blend the structure's functionality with the park's world-renowned beauty. He reached out to Plants On Walls, and decided on a system of Florafelt Pocket Panels.
All told, 250 unique species make the gift shop a tantalizing glimpse of what waits just beyond the gates.
The Florafelt Pocket Panels turned the building into its own attraction and the bookstore has never been busier. Dennis notes how sales far exceed goals since since installation. Intrigued by the unique beauty, visitors surround the shop and eventually step inside.
Originally planted by volunteer Steph Kantorski, other volunteers now happily care for the garden. They monitor and adjust, moving and rearranging for the best results. The pockets make it easy to perfect the composition and turn the garden into an interactive learning experience.
Garden botanists selected a variety of plants, including many unique grasses, for the areas where bright light and shade dominate at different times. For the full sun-facing section, succulents and perennials enjoy their perfect environment.
The Florafelt Pockets Panels are mounted with little more than their hanging tabs. Entirely self-watering with a single drip irrigation line, the excess drains to a tray.
You can see the living gift shop at the main entrance to the San Francisco Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park.

Sun-loving Succulents and Grasses Living Wall
Northern California based garden design team Planted Places installs a beautiful poolside living wall for a client’s private home in Marin, California.
For a distinctive touch, they mounted Florafelt Pocket Panels on 2x4 redwood lumber attached to the fence. In addition to making a dramatic statement by "floating" the living wall, it ensures the fence remains dry.
Automatic irrigation keeps the plants moist. Two drip emitters are placed at the top of every Florafelt Pocket, positioned to each edge. The placement irrigates the Florafelt Pockets, not the plants. Roots seek the moisture collected in the pockets and grow into the felted system. This unbound approach allows roots to grow into and through the felt, letting the plants reach full maturity, far beyond the efficient size of each pocket.
Planted Places worked with their client to create a beautiful mix of cool and fresh designs.
Starting with smaller plants is not only more economical, it allows the wall to take a natural, individual character. The Florafelt Pockets are elegant enough to highlight the new plantings before they cover the surface with a dramatic cliffside of life.
Instantly Beautiful Succulent Living Wall
In a single afternoon, a beautiful wall of succulents dramatically transforms a retail entrance for Jamba Juice in Martinez, California, concealing an unsightly recycling area.
The team from Hannah Construction attaches the Florafelt Pocket Panel living wall system to an existing landscape screen.
Featuring aloe, this beautiful mix of succulents will thrive in the bright indirect light of this open air entryway.
In just a few hours, the entrance and outdoor seating area designed by Johnson Lyman Architects was revitalized into a welcoming spot for customers.
Vertical Garden Window to Nature
A wall of plants is more than a beautiful home feature. It’s an entire community of living things. Together they have a life of their own and create a distinct personality. The leaves grow and move every day, creating a subtle but distinct change. It’a living ecosystem that’s complex and rich, and that’s why they draw our attention.
Plants Give Back
Plants bring huge joy. We love potted plants in our homes and offices, but it's magnified with an entire wall. We spend most of our time indoors, so a vertical garden is a reminder of how important nature is for our well-being. It feels like an open window and lets us experience nature every day.
Getting to Know Your Vertical Garden
Touching your plants lets you know your living wall better. You can feel the raw power of life in each leaf. Interacting with plants reminds of the miracle of living things. Getting to know your living wall will also make the plants healthier and happier. For example, wiping leaves removes dust so they can breath easier. The surface of leaves absorb carbon dioxide from our breath and converts it to oxygen, which helps us breathe easier too.
Inspiring Green Design
This living wall is designed by the architect and owners of this Noe Valley San Francisco home. With their construction team, they created a waterproof alcove with floor drains. An inset plywood surface was waterproofed with rubber pond liner, and Florafelt Pockets were mounted using deck screws. Irrigation tubing was added at the top, and water slowly drips to each plant. Full-spectrum LED lighting provides perfect light levels. A mix of philodendrons and others are were added to create dramatic green sweeps with subtle textures. Over the years, the plants were rearranged, and new species introduced. The Florafelt Pockets and Wraps system makes it easy to sculpt this well-loved living wall.
Florafelt Pockets Make it Easy
Affordable and elegantly designed synthetic felt pockets are mounted easily to walls. Once irrigation and drainage is in place they are quickly planted to provide you with an instant living experience.

Kingwood Center Gardens Greenhouse Expands Bromeliad Collection Vertically
The famous Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield, Ohio received an enormous donation of bromeliads from botanist Jerry Raack. With no room to spare and eager to spruce up the plain wall of a heavily-visited attraction, they decided to grow vertically. Greenhouse manager Doug Schuster asked production coordinator Laura Mast to find the best system. Laura researched online and discovered Florafelt vertical gardens.
The Florafelt vertical garden planters hang from horizontal metal supports using s-hooks. The plants were wrapped and arranged into a beautiful display that boasts seasonal color.
Bromeliads are epiphytes that require minimal roots and naturally grow in trees. Watering twice a week with a hand sprayer keeps them happy and thriving.
Doug and Laura are not the only ones delighted with the results - the plant wall is a huge hit with visitors.
