Plants On Walls Revisits Urban Bistro a Year Later
A year ago, PlantsOnWalls installed a 14" x 12" living wall with 360 individual ferns using Florafelt pocket planters for Urban Bistro in Burlingame, California. Now we're back to see how they've grown. A close look at the blue star fern shows some expansion of its unusual root system.
BLUE STAR FERN (phlebodium aureum mandaianum): The Blue Star Fern is a beautiful but rugged fern that makes a vivid accent for your vertical garden. After a few years, the fuzzy orange roots begin to crawl over the felt pockets, creating even more dynamic color contrasts.
The fantasy-blue color of this easy-to-grow fern is reminiscent of nautical and water-related design, and make it a stunning addition to living walls. The oversized fronds make a bold canvas for the truly striking color. Best grown in shade to part shade, this is a very forgiving fern, provided it is not overwatered, and shows good drought tolerance.

Plants On Walls Installs: At the CBRE Tower, Downtown San Francisco
Plants On Walls Installs - 128" x 123" vertical garden, living wall. 100 Pine Street. San Francisco. |
Plants On Walls Installs today completed a stunning 100 square foot living wall, tucked beneath CBRE's corporate towers at 100 Pine Street in downtown San Francisco. The massive wall uses 240 plants as the finishing touch on a redesign of the company's street signage, bringing a distintive, eco-friendly flair to the entrance.
Chris Bribach, organic architect and founder of Plants On Walls, directed a team of installers from Gachina Landcape Management to arrange the ficus decora (rubber-tree), birdsnest fern, mother fern, and bear-paw fern on the stainless steel-framed Florafelt vertical planter system, installed by R.N.Feild Construction.
The frame collects water at the base, which drains into the planter below. The wall is irrigated with a 1/4" soaker hose tucked into the top row of pockets, so that water wicks down the inside layer to the bottom tray. The plants draw water from the moist back layer and the roots will grow into the felt permanantly, locking themselves into the internal felt layers.
The visual design is intended to create the feeling of a window into the woods. The birdnest ferns hover in the upper region to create a tree-like canopy as they grow, and recessed lighting from above will give them an ethereal glow. Below, horizontal columns of ficus decora create the impression of tree trunks, and will drop long roots to the ground. The bear-paw and mother fern frame the other imagry to create a jungle-scape of shade loving ferns.
Special thanks to Alan Trinh, Asst. Real Estate Manager, CBRE and his vision for a greener downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco Designer Showcase 2012
How can an elegant, traditional entrance to a stately San Francisco home, be re-imagined to be greener and more welcoming, if not otherworldly? Living Green, partnering with Plants On Walls to create a southern exposed vertical melange of succulents and coppery oxalis that morphs into a private shady fern grotto, was part of the solution. Add the pristine white marble floors that one would find in a rajah's palace or in the fabled Moroccan Casbah Tamador, that the late and great maestro, Luciano tempo, so skillfully restored. Throw in fantastical light fixtures, created by non other than the Luciano himself, and a pair of stunningly beautiful elephants to welcome the weary traveler. Enter The Casbah!

Davis Dalbok of Living Green asked Chris Bribach to install Floraflet Vertical Garden Planters beside the main entry. 504 pockets await the array of succulents and ferns that will be installed over the next days. The living wall is a temporary display that will host the plant life for the month. Pipe clamps were used 'lightly' connect to the existing historic structure. Drip trays at the base neatly collect all the moisture and lead it by hoses to a drain. The San Francisco Decorator Showhouse is located at 2020 Jackson Street and will be open to the public from April 28th to May 28th. Website: http://decoratorshowcase.org/ [map]

Joyous Spaces Roof Garden
Joy Alberts of Joyous Spaces created a spectacular roof garden for her Mission District client in San Francisco. She used 25 Florafelt F24 Vertical Garden Planters to make a continuous snake of vertical garden to be filled with succulent and other full-sun varieties. PlantsOnWalls provided the galvanized pipe frame system that allowed for an easy installation that also allowed for a non-penetration of the roof membrane. The 65 foot undulating living wall creates a privacy barrier flowing with living color, including herbs and edibles, and adds 260 square feet of urban garden. Computer Rendered Living Wall Design
Chris Briabch at Plants On Walls use computers to create rendered designs to gain client approval prior to installation. Anyone can make use of image layout software like Adobe Illustrator or other presentation layout interfaces can use transparant (.gif) images of plants to create layers of repeated images which result in semi-realistic views that represent how a planted vertical garden might feel when complete. Multiple concepts can be presented and approved prior to installation.
Chris worked closely with the client's designers to decide upon this final rendered design to be 16' wide by 11' high.
An overlay is placed upon the design to corresponds to the specifications for of the vertical planters' pocket grid. Bold lines highlight the 18 panels used to achieve the full size of this custom living wall design.
The grid is then used to create the final layout during installation. The plants were Root-Wrapped by the greenhouse and placed into boxes. The living wall kit and plants were transported to the job site. In two days Plants On Walls installed the living wall kit and plants to create a living tapestry that resembles a window that looks upon a rain-forest. The 2-1/2 minute video below shows how the entire installation was done.
