BLUE STAR FERN (phlebodium aureum mandaianum): The Blue Star Fern is a beautiful but rugged fern that makes a vivid accent for your vertical garden. After a few years, the fuzzy orange roots begin to crawl over the felt pockets, creating even more dynamic color contrasts.
The fantasy-blue color of this easy-to-grow fern is reminiscent of nautical and water-related design, and make it a stunning addition to living walls. The oversized fronds make a bold canvas for the truly striking color. Best grown in shade to part shade, this is a very forgiving fern, provided it is not overwatered, and shows good drought tolerance.

Downtown Vertical Garden
Among the industrial architecture of daily office life, this vertical garden brings not only calm repose of the mind, but a surprising shot of organic vitality, thanks to the forward-thinking vision of CBRE for its new entrance. http://plantsonwalls.com
Plants On Walls Installs: At the CBRE Tower, Downtown San Francisco
today completed a stunning 100 square foot living wall, tucked beneath CBRE's corporate towers at
100 Pine Street in downtown San Francisco
. The massive wall uses 240 plants as the finishing touch on a redesign of the company's street signage, bringing a distintive, eco-friendly flair to the entrance.
Chris Bribach, organic architect and founder of
, directed a team of installers from Gachina Landcape Management to arrange the ficus decora (rubber-tree), birdsnest fern, mother fern, and bear-paw fern on the stainless steel-framed
Florafelt vertical planter system
, installed by R.N.Feild Construction.
The frame collects water at the base, which drains into the planter below. The wall is irrigated with a 1/4" soaker hose tucked into the top row of pockets, so that water wicks down the inside layer to the bottom tray. The plants draw water from the moist back layer and the roots will grow into the felt permanantly, locking themselves into the internal felt layers.
The visual design is intended to create the feeling of a window into the woods. The birdnest ferns hover in the upper region to create a tree-like canopy as they grow, and recessed lighting from above will give them an ethereal glow. Below, horizontal columns of ficus decora create the impression of tree trunks, and will drop long roots to the ground. The bear-paw and mother fern frame the other imagry to create a jungle-scape of shade loving ferns.
Special thanks to Alan Trinh, Asst. Real Estate Manager, CBRE and his vision for a greener downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco Designer Showcase 2012
How can an elegant, traditional entrance to a stately San Francisco home, be re-imagined to be greener and more welcoming, if not otherworldly? Living Green, partnering with Plants On Walls to create a southern exposed vertical melange of succulents and coppery oxalis that morphs into a private shady fern grotto, was part of the solution. Add the pristine white marble floors that one would find in a rajah's palace or in the fabled Moroccan Casbah Tamador, that the late and great maestro, Luciano tempo, so skillfully restored. Throw in fantastical light fixtures, created by non other than the Luciano himself, and a pair of stunningly beautiful elephants to welcome the weary traveler.

Fern Filled Window Well
Plants On Walls created a stunning custom living wall installation for a private home on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. The clients wanted an exciting and fresh way to mask the bare retaining walls of their master suite's sub-level patio. The open-air indirect light was perfect for a variety of ferns. 234 root-wrapped ferns were planted into the felt pockets, transforming a utilitarian patio into a vibrant space bursting with lush greenery. The client was delighted and remarked on how it recalled childhood forest memories.
