Florafelt Pro System Guide

The Florafelt Pro System is a patented, architectural-grade vertical garden solution. It utilizes water-wicking Florafelt Grow Strips woven into stainless steel wire grids to create a high-density, drip-free living wall for professionals and hobbyists alike.

1. System Overview & Components

The Pro System is designed for scalability—from residential accents to "mega-scale" commercial walls.

  • Wire Grids: 36" wide x 24" high x 4.25" deep. Made of high-quality 304 stainless steel.

  • Grow Strip: 6-inch wide horticulture fabric (recycled PET) woven into the grid to form pockets.

  • Root Wraps: 16-inch felt wraps that house the plants, allowing for off-site prep and clean replacement.

  • Water Shields: Coroplast inserts that protect the mounting surface and direct water flow.

2. Installation Guide

Phase 1: Mounting the Grids

There are two primary methods for securing the system:

Clip Mounting (Concrete or Wood): Uses stainless clips and Tapcon screws (for concrete) or deck screws (for wood).

Strut Mounting (Commercial/Tall Walls): Uses galvanized or stainless Unistrut frames. Provides a structural air gap and high wind-load resistance.

Phase 2: Inserting Water Shields

Before felting, slide the Water Shields into the grid from the top or bottom.

  1. Fold side edges inward to slide them in.

  2. Overlap them like shingles (top over bottom) to ensure water stays within the system.

  3. Pop the sides out to lock them into the grid cage.

Phase 3: Weaving the Grow Strip (Felting)

The Grow Strip is what makes the system "wick."

  • Tools: Use Titanium Scissors (regular blades will fail).

  • The Process: Start at the top. Weave the strip in and out of the grid wires.

  • Depth: Use a 5-inch depth gauge (cardboard or plastic) to ensure every pocket is uniform.

  • Coverage: Each 3'x2' grid requires one 15-yard roll of felt.

3. Irrigation Systems

The Florafelt Pro System is unique because you typically only irrigate the very top row. Water wicks down through the felt to all levels.

Option A: Drip Irrigation (Standard)

  • Setup: One line of 5/8" tubing across the top.

  • Emitters: Use two 1/2 GPH drip emitters per pocket column.

  • Important: Do not install emitters at every row; gravity and wicking handle the distribution.

Option B: Recirculating System

  • Setup: Uses a reservoir (tank or pond) and a pump.

  • Tubing: Use 5/8" tubing with 3/8" open holes drilled above each column.

  • Note: Do not use drip emitters in recirculating systems; they will clog with organic debris.

4. Planting & Maintenance

Planting with Root Wraps

  1. Wrap: Use 16-inch Root Wraps. Remove excess soil to create a flat pouch.

  2. Insert: Tuck the wrapped plant deep into the pocket so it makes firm contact with the wicking felt.

  3. Order: Start planting from the bottom and work your way up.

Long-Term Care

  • Moisture Sensing: Use the Florafelt WIFI Moisture Sensor (Govee-based) in the 2nd row from the top to monitor for dry-outs via smartphone alerts.

  • Feeding: Use the Plant Food Injector for automatic fertilizing or add time-release spikes to the top pockets.

  • Pump Care: For recirculating systems, clean the pump rotor annually to remove algae.

5. Technical Specifications (Summary)

  • Grid Size: 3ft x 2ft (Can be cut with bolt cutters).

  • Capacity: 24 pockets per grid.

  • Weight: Approximately 10-15 lbs per sq. ft. when planted and saturated.

  • Material: 304 Stainless Steel (Grid), Recycled PET (Felt).

Pro Tip: When installing in public spaces, use a lock box for irrigation controls and a "Remain On" sign for water spigots to prevent accidental system shutdowns.
